2008 Easter Seals Regatta - Saturday July 5th

The RCYC hosted the Easter Seals Regatta. A great day and a great cause. Over 50 boats and 300 people took part and it was great to see the smiles all over the Easter Seals kids faces

Jen Provan and Team Canada Olympic Team at the Yngling Open worlds

Jen Provan, along with Martha henderson and Katie Abbott in their last minute preparations for the Olympics are attending the Open Yngling worlds in Holland

see below for an update from the team

We’ve had quite an exciting few days.  We just completed the 2nd day of the 2008 Open Yngling Worlds and are sitting in first place!  After day one we were sitting in third place, our finishes our finishes being a 5th and a 9th.  It was a great day, but today was even better.  The first race of day two was tricky with puffy, shifty winds and intermittent rain showers.  Half way through the race we were sitting in 5th place, but left our competitors for more breeze on the left side of the race course.  It was a risk, but we were confident!  We got into the new wind… tacked… and were leading the race by numerous boatlengths.  Check out the first photo we’ve attached.  It was a significant first place!

We started race 2 on day 2 at the crowded boat end.  We were leading the race with the second place boat close and the rest of the competition far behind.  However, the race committee notified us that we had started early and received and were to receive an OCS (on course side), thus points totaling the fleet plus one.  In an effort to investigate what went wrong, we asked the race committee if we could listen to their voice recording of the start.  After a few minutes of waiting, the PRO (Principal Race Officer) informed us that in fact the race committee had made a mistake.  They had no record of us being called over early and our first place was reinstated.

So Team OliExco finishes day 2 winning the day and stepping up the scoreboard into first place.  We’ll keep you posted as to our progress over the rest of the regatta.  If you’d like to visit the regatta website, you can do so at http://www.worlds.kdy.dk

The 2008 RCYC Open was a huge success with 188 boats in attendance, ranging from Optimists to the largest yacht, the J-133. The weather and wind were perfect southerlies, starting with race number 1 at 5 knots and ending with a beautiful 16-18 knot breeze by the last race on Sunday.

Six race courses were used and a special thank you must be given to the Port Credit Yacht Club, the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club, and the Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club for each running a complete course for the RCYC.
