2008 Easter Seals Regatta - Saturday July 5th

The RCYC hosted the Easter Seals Regatta. A great day and a great cause. Over 50 boats and 300 people took part and it was great to see the smiles all over the Easter Seals kids faces

Jen Provan and Team Canada Olympic Team at the Yngling Open worlds

Jen Provan, along with Martha henderson and Katie Abbott in their last minute preparations for the Olympics are attending the Open Yngling worlds in Holland

see below for an update from the team

We’ve had quite an exciting few days.  We just completed the 2nd day of the 2008 Open Yngling Worlds and are sitting in first place!  After day one we were sitting in third place, our finishes our finishes being a 5th and a 9th.  It was a great day, but today was even better.  The first race of day two was tricky with puffy, shifty winds and intermittent rain showers.  Half way through the race we were sitting in 5th place, but left our competitors for more breeze on the left side of the race course.  It was a risk, but we were confident!  We got into the new wind… tacked… and were leading the race by numerous boatlengths.  Check out the first photo we’ve attached.  It was a significant first place!

We started race 2 on day 2 at the crowded boat end.  We were leading the race with the second place boat close and the rest of the competition far behind.  However, the race committee notified us that we had started early and received and were to receive an OCS (on course side), thus points totaling the fleet plus one.  In an effort to investigate what went wrong, we asked the race committee if we could listen to their voice recording of the start.  After a few minutes of waiting, the PRO (Principal Race Officer) informed us that in fact the race committee had made a mistake.  They had no record of us being called over early and our first place was reinstated.

So Team OliExco finishes day 2 winning the day and stepping up the scoreboard into first place.  We’ll keep you posted as to our progress over the rest of the regatta.  If you’d like to visit the regatta website, you can do so at http://www.worlds.kdy.dk

The Toronto Area Hospice Regatta was also held on the 21st weekend at NYC. This OD regatta has been started to replace the NOOD and follows a longstanding US tradition of supporting a local hospice site with a local regatta. A great weekend of sailing was once again had at the club. 14 J105’s, 17 J 24’s and the 5 Dragons all sailed on the lake in sometimes very trying conditions. Day one started in the morning with a heavy fogs and boats were held on shore until it lifted. Racing got underway and all fleets got in two 5 knot races with the breeze from the southwest.

Sunday racing got underway after a little delay to let the breeze settle in. The day ended up with a beautiful 12-15 knot south westerly for the last race.

An extremely active sailing week at the RCYC.

1/Another RCYC team going to the Olympics- Congratulations to Martha

Henderson and Jen Provan for qualifying the Olympics this August.
Jen's switch from a 470 to the Yngling paid off quickly as their
recent results at the world championships qualified them for the
Games. Katie Abbott from the Sarnia Yacht Club is the third person on
the boat.

RCYC had a very good showing at the Skipper's Plan ABYC Regatta over the  May 24-25  weekend.  Saturday's racing was held in a 20-knot northerly that made for some exciting racing, while Sunday's breeze was a light shifty southerly breeze which made for a more thoughtful day.  Hopefully this trend will increase at the upcoming RCYC Open on June 14-15.

It was late in 2007 that Vice Commodore Fred Eaton approached members about starting a match-racing program at the RCYC. After doing some research into the demand Vice Commodore Eaton deemed there was a definite demand and an explicit need for the program at the RCYC. Commodore Eaton then passed the reins onto fellow member Jeremy Lucas to spearhead the inaugural year of club match racing at the RCYC. The club in an attempt to help promote match racing has purchased four Sonars and run Wednesday night match racing, and hosting the club championship in June and a grade three open championship in August.

To kick off the match racing season the RCYC hosted a match-racing clinic over the Victoria Day long weekend, with guest coach Dave Perry. The clinic was attended by over twenty members of the RCYC, including Peter Wickwire, who with no previous experience qualified for the Detroit Cup, a grade two event. The clinic had three components; on land in class lessons, on water Read More »

Now that the season is well underway a couple of reminders:

1/ The RCYC open is scheduled for June 14-15. This is the club’s marquee event so we hope to see as many boats out as possible. Check out the regatta section of the web site for details.

We have fleets from optimists to Farr 40’s so get out and have some fun.

2/ At the direction of the fleet executive the sailing staff has been directed to strictly enforce not only that all dinghies are on dollies, with suitable covers, rigged and ready to go sailing but also that everyone has an assigned slip with a sticker on the dolly to confirm this.

For all boats that are not in sailable condition they will be tagged and put into storage on south island. It is our intent to do this the week of June 10th. If this cannot be done please contact the dock master to make alternative arrangements. We want this area to be a place all members will be proud of and Read More »

8 meter spring series

Saturday, June 7th

Seven of the RCYC’s 8 meters sailed two races in a beautiful 5-8 knot south westerly breeze for the 2008 spring series title.

Bryan Gooderham, sailing Diane and Ron Palm’s Venture showed the way by winning both races. Showing great speed and boat handling Venture sailed conservatively and led at every mark for the day.
