We’ve had quite an exciting few days.  We just completed the 2nd day of the 2008 Open Yngling Worlds and are sitting in first place!  After day one we were sitting in third place, our finishes our finishes being a 5th and a 9th.  It was a great day, but today was even better.  The first race of day two was tricky with puffy, shifty winds and intermittent rain showers.  Half way through the race we were sitting in 5th place, but left our competitors for more breeze on the left side of the race course.  It was a risk, but we were confident!  We got into the new wind… tacked… and were leading the race by numerous boatlengths.  Check out the first photo we’ve attached.  It was a significant first place!

We started race 2 on day 2 at the crowded boat end.  We were leading the race with the second place boat close and the rest of the competition far behind.  However, the race committee notified us that we had started early and received and were to receive an OCS (on course side), thus points totaling the fleet plus one.  In an effort to investigate what went wrong, we asked the race committee if we could listen to their voice recording of the start.  After a few minutes of waiting, the PRO (Principal Race Officer) informed us that in fact the race committee had made a mistake.  They had no record of us being called over early and our first place was reinstated.

So Team OliExco finishes day 2 winning the day and stepping up the scoreboard into first place.  We’ll keep you posted as to our progress over the rest of the regatta.  If you’d like to visit the regatta website, you can do so at http://www.worlds.kdy.dk

For the past 3 years on the first weekend of May RCYC has hosted the High Performance Regatta. This event is intended to be fun with a large number of short races to allow our athletes to practice racing skills in a large fleet. The HP regatta runs regardless of weather and in the past we have seen heavy wind, rain and even some snow. This year was relatively mild as long as sailors avoided going swimming in the still icy harbor. 20 boats were in attendance with participation from beginners sailing there first regatta ever, some of RCYC’s Master Sailors and National Team members. The Laser fleet saw a close battle between Justin Barnes and Kyle Dakin. A string of OCS’s on Justin’s part saw Kyle take the win by a point. The overall winner in the radial fleet was Ingrid Merry who put up Read More »

This year there saw a very large Canadian and RCYC contingent attending the Midwinter’s regatta in Clearwater Florida. 23 Canadians in total, 17 of which are RCYC High Performance Team members. The Midwinter’s, held over 4 days from Feb 19th - 22nd saw a wide range of weather conditions from big breeze and big waves on the first two days, to light winds on Saturday and Sunday. These conditions rewarded the sailors with a wide range of skills. The Laser Fleet was won by British National Team member Nick Thompson. First Canadian was Bernard Luttmer, followed by Lee Parkhill in 5th and Chris Dold in 8th. The radial fleet was won by former Radial world Champion Paige Reily, narrowly beating out China gold medalist Anna Tunniclif. First Canadian was ... Read More »

It’s been a very busy couple of months. Most people assume sailing slows down as soon as September hits but not this year!

Every weekend of September saw the High Performance Team and some Junior Racers competing at local events including the RHYC Cornish Hen, The High School Championships at WYC, Fall CORK in Kingston and finally the National Qualifying Regatta in St. Margaret’s Bay NS.

Our Sailors took home top spots at all of these events, most notably at Fall CORK where we came 1st – 6th in the Laser Radial Fleet and at the NQR where 5 of our sailors qualified to the National Team. We also have a large group of up and coming sailors. Just to give you an idea RCYC has 7 of the top 15 Laser and 5 of the top 15 Radial sailors in the country.

Continuing into the fall there is training every Saturday starting ... Read More »

Over the September 20-21 weekend RCYC sailors competed at the CORK Fall regatta. This is an ISAF grade 2 event for both Laser and Radial Classes. Our RCYC athletes took podium finishes in every fleet.

Day one saw strong southerly wind around 20kts. It was not a typical Kingston day as leaders could come out of both the left and right sides of the race course. Racers had to be smart and manage risk upwind. Large waves from the southwest made downwind legs interesting as sailors had to decide to serf the waves early but end up far left of the leeward and reach in, or reach across the course early and serf the waves to the leeward mark. Most of the time it paid to get right on the downwind and surf to the gate marks.

The Laser Radial Fleet was dominated by the RCYC. First through 6th were High Performance Team members. Winning the event with a comfortable lead was Ingrid Merry who only finished out of the top 5 once. Ingrid was untouchable off the start line and u ... Read More »

2 RCYC boats competed successfully at the 2008 Chicago-Mackinac Race. John Mcleod sailing his J133  and Keith Bechard sailing his Farr 39.5 flew the RCYC burgee with distinction at the 2008 Chicago-Mac race. John Mcleod sailed to a 3rd overall finish in division 2 out of 18 boats while Keith Bechard won his level class (Farr 39.5) out of 7 other yachts.

It was a tricky race filled with varying breeze and the veterans seemed to have things figured out.
