2008 Easter Seals Regatta - Saturday July 5th

The RCYC hosted the Easter Seals Regatta. A great day and a great cause. Over 50 boats and 300 people took part and it was great to see the smiles all over the Easter Seals kids faces

Jen Provan and Team Canada Olympic Team at the Yngling Open worlds

Jen Provan, along with Martha henderson and Katie Abbott in their last minute preparations for the Olympics are attending the Open Yngling worlds in Holland

see below for an update from the team

We’ve had quite an exciting few days.  We just completed the 2nd day of the 2008 Open Yngling Worlds and are sitting in first place!  After day one we were sitting in third place, our finishes our finishes being a 5th and a 9th.  It was a great day, but today was even better.  The first race of day two was tricky with puffy, shifty winds and intermittent rain showers.  Half way through the race we were sitting in 5th place, but left our competitors for more breeze on the left side of the race course.  It was a risk, but we were confident!  We got into the new wind… tacked… and were leading the race by numerous boatlengths.  Check out the first photo we’ve attached.  It was a significant first place!

We started race 2 on day 2 at the crowded boat end.  We were leading the race with the second place boat close and the rest of the competition far behind.  However, the race committee notified us that we had started early and received and were to receive an OCS (on course side), thus points totaling the fleet plus one.  In an effort to investigate what went wrong, we asked the race committee if we could listen to their voice recording of the start.  After a few minutes of waiting, the PRO (Principal Race Officer) informed us that in fact the race committee had made a mistake.  They had no record of us being called over early and our first place was reinstated.

So Team OliExco finishes day 2 winning the day and stepping up the scoreboard into first place.  We’ll keep you posted as to our progress over the rest of the regatta.  If you’d like to visit the regatta website, you can do so at http://www.worlds.kdy.dk

The 49er worlds are currently being held in Freeport, Bahamas (January 4-9). The RCYC has 2 boats entered in Gordon Cook (2008 olympian in the 49er) with new crew Hunter Lowden(from BC) , and the team of Billy Gooderham/Ian Hogan.

Conditions in Freeport can only be described as amazing. Windspeeds of 15-20 knots meet the competitors every day (or at least so far).

After day one Cook/Lowden are currently in 23rd postion overall and Gooderham/Hogan sit just outside of the Gold fleet in 26th overall. Both have had excellent individual races with Cook coming 6th in the first race of the series and Gooderham placing 5th overall in the second race of the series.

Racing continues to the 9th of January, and overall results can be found at

Congratulations to David Wright who was just awarded Canadain Male Athlete of the year for 2009. David, culminated a terrific season with a sixth place in the laser world championships as well as many top 5 finishes in the International regatta scene.

Well done david

And we cannot forget Lee parkhill winning CYA rookie of the year. This award is given to the 1st year Canadian Sailing Team member who has the best finish at their World Championships. Lee place an incredible 16th overall in the laser worlds. This is the best finish for a relative newcomer to the laser class in any country for many years.

The future looks bright indeed for not only these two sailors but the many others who trained and pushed these two to their results

Surviving 11 other fleets challenging for the prestigous patricia's Binnacle trophy John Cushman had the best consistency and results and won the 2009 Champion of Champions regatta.

The winds were very light and varible causing most fleets to see both ends of the leaderboard over three races.

Congratulations to the entire Ideal 18 fleet

Marvinn Beckmann from the USA won the hotly contested Etchell North Americans held from September 16th to the 19th of September. 35 entries from the USA, Canada and Australia visited the club for the past four days and were thrilled to call RCYC home over the past few days.

The RCYC has a long association with the Etchells fleet. Dirk Kneulman is the current boat builder in North America, and it was great to see Commodore Gordon Norton who owned the very first Etchells in Canada come to the opening cermonies. In fact it seemed every member who stood up to speak to the fleet at the various functions had a story to tell about their Etchell sailing. Commodore Meadows regaled us with his stories of the Etchells, as well as Tony Anderson, Commodore Sherwood, Vice commodore fred eaton and many others.

5 races were held over 3 days. Day one saw light winds and bumpy seas from the East whic ... Read More »

Sheboygan, Wis., (September 13, 2009) -- New Zealand’s Samantha
Osborne today bested Canada’s Jen Provan in a thrilling five-race
final that came down to the last leg of the series to win the
inaugural Buddy Melges Challenge hosted by the US Sailing Center
Sheboygan.
Provan finished the round robin with 8 points, tied with Peru’s
Tania Zimmerman, who was seeded first going into the semifinal
knockout series because she had beaten Provan in the round robin.
Zimmerman faced Osborne in the semifinal knockout series, with
Osborne winning both races to advance to the final. Likewise, Provan,
who faced the other New Zealand team, led by Stephanie Hazard, won
both semifinal knockout races to head to the best-of-five final

The 2009 Royal Weekend held Aug 22-23 is now over with 38 boats in attendance.

The conditions on Saturday were challenging to say the least. Big shifts, light and a strong current made for some dramatic turnarounds for each fleet during the course of both race 1 and 2.

Jim Rathbun of Hey Jude, Robert Baker of Planet B and Kathy Pask on Full Tilt Boogie seemed to have the best handle on the conditions in the J105 fleet. In the 8 meters Raven and Sarissa seemed to manage the day the best.

All the regatta competitors were thrilled to see Doug Bullock of Kittiwake in his classic Cheoy Lee win a race in the phrf division!

On sunday the 3rd annual pursuit race for the Queens Cup was held. After a first attempt at getting it started the race was abandoned while t ... Read More »
